One of 8 Historical Paintings in the Rotunda. This one is the "Discovery of the Mississippi“ by William H. Powell. hmmm...well...if you read about it in the link, the description isn't so controversial. But I can't help but notice how the Spanish conqueror and his troops are (IMO) aggressively surrounding the native tribe and...of course...the crucifix being erected on their land. This painting was commissioned in 1847 and purchased for the Rotunda in 1855.
